Narrative

A Johannes Schlott arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Priscilla (Capt. William Wilson) from Rotterdam, Netherlands, according to immigration records. He signed the Oath on September 12, 1750. The family legends as set down by great grandson Joseph Uhrich identify this man as our ancestor.
No documentation of his birthplace. The Uhrich memoirs say that he came from Hesse Darmstadt or "Palatina" and suggests that he possibly served as a bond servant upon arrival in Philadelphia to work off his passage.
When Johannes came to Reamstown is not known; no clear reference to him between 1750 and 1761 has yet been found.
His property included a small house in Reamstown and 7 acres of land about a half-mile from Reamstown in Cocalico twp. He owned lot 28, Reamstown, on October 16, 1761 -- land records cited in the "Reamstown 1760 - 1960 Bicentennial" book. His occupation, according to his will, was joiner or cabinetmaker.
Johannes' wife was named Catherine or Catherina. We have no information about Catherine. A marriage of John Schotter and Catherine on 13 Dec 1757 in Cocalico twp is reported in Rev. Waldschmidt's marriages -- Berks co. Church records. Whether this is Johannes is unknown.
According to Muddy Creek church parish records, Johannes and Catherine were sponsors in the baptism of Andreas Riehms (Reams?) and in the baptism of Johannes Reams on 3 March 1765. They also were sponsors in the baptism of Susanna Kilian or Kiljan on 3 August 1783. Johannes was made deacon of the Muddy Creek church in 1770.
Johannes' will is dated 1 Oct 1785, proved 20 March 1789. Will book X Vol. 2, p 24. The original is handwritten in German script, gives the spelling as Schlott, and is signed by him as Johannes Schlott. The translation, presumably filed at probate, gives the name as John Shlott, and in one place as John Shott. The witnesses were Adam Musser and Henry Ream, and the executors were Adam Gill or Groll and John Miller.
Wife Catharine was not mentioned in the will at all, suggesting she had died between August 1783 and 1 Oct 1785, when the will was made.
Daughter Margaret -- Margreta in Johannes' will, is the eldest child. He left her a right to use the Reamstown house for life or until married.
Johannes (jr.) is identified in the will as the eldest son. The will limited Johannes' share as eldest son to one English shilling, and passed the customary child's portion directly to the children of Johannes (jr.), cutting him entirely out of his inheritance. The will refers to other children of the senior Johannes but does not name them.
The final accounting of the estate filed in 1790 lists the children of the elder Johannes as John, Margaret, Frederick, Susanna (wife of George Hinekle) and Henry. Frederick was appointed guardian of Henry, a minor older than 14. Henry was thus the youngest child; his birthday was between 1771 and 1776. Johannes (jr.) had two or more children by 1785; the final accounting -- Misc Book 1788-1791, pp 239-240, filed in 1790 -- pays the shilling to him, and a full share to the "children of son John".
The confirmation of Johannes, Margaret and Fredrick, and Susannah's birth and baptism as daughter of Johannes and Catherine are reported in Muddy Creek church records.
Information about Henry is very sketchy. Joseph Uhrich reports that Johannes had 3 boys and 2 girls, and referred to "grandfather's brother Henry" as having died in Reamstown.
Early muster rolls of the Lancaster militia, 8th company under Captain Smuller, and then the 3rd Battalion from Reamstown, serving under Captain Andrew Ream, from 1779 through 1782 list Johannes Sr. and his son Johannes Jr. under a variety of spellings, from Sloth to Shit. Johannes served in the ranks of the 7th and 8th classes, while Johannes Jr. served in the 4th class. Both appear in a 1782 list of those between the ages of 18 and 53; if accurate, then Johannes Sr. birth date was not earlier than 1729.

"Family history states that John Schlott arrived in America sometime in the 1720's to 1730's". This information was somewhat substantiated by a paragraph listed in Rupp that describes Schlott's as being early pioneers in the Cocalico Township Lancaster Co. PA Area.
"John Schlott purchased land (Lot #28) near Reamstown, PA in 1760. This fact is documented in the "Reamstown Bicentennial Booklet". Also tax records found from 1770-1789 confirm John Schlott owned this land. Frederick paid the taxes on the land after his father's death in 1789.
In 1770 John Schlott was installed as an elder or deacon of the Muddy Creek Reformed Congregation.
From John Schlott's will and probate records, a piece of land was identified as his near Reamstown, in Cocalico Twp. Lancaster Co. PA. The tract of land (approximately 7 acres) was described as being about one half mile from Reamstown. Probate documents state the land was originally purchased by William Shoemaker. Further research indicated that Jacob Schneider purchased the land sometime after William Shoemaker. Jacob Schneider's heirs were said to have sold some or all of the land to Clayton & Lydia Killan on March 13, 1901.

I'm currently looking for information regarding the descendants of Simon Essig & John Schlott. My direct ancestors came from the marriage of Catherine Essig (granddaughter of Simon Essig) and Isaac Schlott (great grandson of John Schlott from Reamstown, PA). They were married in Stark County, Ohio on October 10, 1850.
I have a great deal of information already, but there are still holes in the puzzle. I would like to share information with anyone who has pieces of this puzzle.

This is the direct lineage of Isaac Sloat. I have a lot more information on siblings and other family ties but for sake of time this is the brief version.
Johann (John) Schlott married Catharina (?) circa 1750's. They had 5 known children. Our ancestor was Frederick Schlott. Both lived and died near Reamstown, PA. I have a copy of John Schlott's will.
Frederick Schlott (b. ~ 1762 d. 1837) married Julianna Muhlheisen ( b. 23 Jan 1769 d. 18 Aug 1844). They had 14 known children. Our ancestor was Heinrich Schlott. Frederick on Heinrich Schlott's farm and is buried with Heinrich in the family burial plot in Rothsville, PA. Julianna Schlott left PA with some of the family (circa 1830 - 1840) and lived with family members in Stark County Ohio (Canton) until her death in 1844.
Heinrich (Henry) Schlott (b. 25 Aug 1791 d. 12 Sep 1839) married Christina Wolf (b. 24 Mar 1798 d. 3 Dec 1829). They had 5 known (possibly 2 unconfirmed) children. Our ancestor was Isaac Schlott (Sloat). I also have the probate records for Henry Schlott as well.
I would very much like to obtain any information you may have on the families. I also have many old photos obtained from my grandparents. One in particular is a snapshot of all of Samuel Sloat's brothers and sisters along with their spouses. George & Mary (Sloat) Sweitzer are both in this picture.
