The different families of the name of Runkle who trace their ancestry back to the early emigrants are principally descendants of those who came to America between the years 1740 and 1750. Among these were Nickel or Nicholas Runckel, who came with Johan in the ship "Loyal Judith" from Rotterdam, last from Cowes, Sept 2, 1743, and Jacob Runckel, who came in the ship Hampshire "from Rotterdam, last from Falmouth Sept 17, 1748.

Nickel, or Nicholas, settled in Bern Twp, Berks County , PA. He lived about ten miles northwest of the city of Reading. The first record that I have found for him is a tax record of 1759. He is listed on the Tax Indices for the years of 1770 - 1789. The report states that he had land in Berks County 1770, 1771, 1772, 1773, 1779, 1781 and that he was married. There are other Runkle's listed on this report such as John, Michael, Wendle, William and Catharine.

Nicholas purchased a tract of land from Sabastian Husnrick on February 19, 1772. He purchased another tract of land from Thomas and William Penn.

Nicholas' will fact shows up in the Abstract of Wills and Administrations, Berks County. NICHOLAS RUNCKEL, BERN, APR 18, 1774, ADM TO ELIZABETH RUNCKEL, THE WIDOW.
