Thomas was probably born in York County., VA. He patented 320 acres between Piney Mountain and Brown's Cove, Hanover County., where he was living in 1743 in Fredericksburg Parish and as late as 28 Apr 1761. He was a planter. He removed before Oct 10, 1773 to Albemarle County. where he died. Ballard was one of the first names in Albemarle County., VA. As early as 1738, Thomas Ballard obtained a patent for three hundred acres near the foot of Piney Mountain. His descendants became numerous, all having large families, and occupying farms stretching from Piney Mountain to Brown's Cove. Thomas Ballard left a will dated 30 June 1779 and recorded May 9, 1782. "Thomas Ballard of Albemarle County. .... daughter Mary five pounds sterling, .... sons Thomas Ballard and Bland Ballard all this my land they suffering my daughter-in-law, Mourning Ballard to live on, use and occupy that part of it whereon she now lives during her life .... the land to be equally divided between them so that Bland enjoy that part whereon he now lives .... The use of a negro Delphia unto my daughter Frances Ballard, and after her decease I give and bequeath the negro Delphia unto her heirs Lawfully Beggotten, but if she die without Heirs then and in that case I give the said girl unto the _natural_ daughter of my daughter Frances named Rachel now wife of Gabriel Mullins;... Daughter Susanna Pettis during her life all my land in Louisa County, and after her death I give and devise the said land unto her, the said Susanna Pettit's eldest son then living .... He was living between 1743 and 1761 in Hanover Co., VA.28 Patented 320 acres between Piney Mountain and Brown's Cove, Hanover Co., where he was living in 1743 in Fredericksburg Parish and as late as 28 Apr 1761. Virginia In the name of God Amen I Thomas Ballard of Albemarle Co. do here make my Last will and Testament hereby Revoking all former wills..... I Resign my Soul to God in all humble hopes of future happiness.... Jesus Christ and Lord. Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary five pounds sterling, Item I give and Devide to my sons Thomas Ballard & Bland Ballard and their heirs for ever all this my land they suffering my daughter- in-law, Mourning Ballard to live on, use and occupy that part of it whereon she now lives during her natural Life and I will and .... the land to be equally divided between them so that Bland enjoy that part whereon he now lives. also from S. Chinn. birth and death places from Martha Cieglo quoting Stan Head on prodigy. Says probably b York Co. and had patented 320 acres between Piney Mountain and Browns Cove in Hanover Co. Va. where he was still living in 1743 in Fredericksburg Parish and as late as April 28, 1761. He moved before 10-10-1773 to Albemarle Co. where he died. According to will dated 6-30-1779 recorded 5-9-1782 he was also survived by Dau. Mary, Sons Thomas and Bland, dau in law Mourning Ballard, dau Anna Maupine.Lynne Miller says died 1804. Edie Suttle says m first to a Sarah ?. He removed to NC during the time the Convention Troops of Gen. Burgoyne were stationed in Albemarle, which must have been about 1779 or 1780 according to the Va. Genealogist, Vol. 29 # 4 pg 299. John Ballard's will dated 1744 says his estate is left in trust to his wife Elizabeth til his son Thomas reaches maturity. thus this Thos. probably does not belong as son of this John. I am doing some research on Thomas Ballard of Albemarle County, who patented 320 acres on Piney Mountain. This patent describes him as being of Caroline County. I've found many references to this patent and found a copy of it online at the Library of Virginia's web site. While searching the site I found another patent to a Thomas Ballard for land in Spotsylvania County, dated 1728. I was wondering if anyone else out there had seen the 1728 land patent and if anyone else believes it is the same Thomas who ended up in Albemarle. This patent is for 330 acres on the North side the Northanna and on the South side the main road. Beginning at two black oaks of Augustin Moores standing in the County line. Caroline and Spotsylvania border each other and the southern boundary to each is the North Anna River. This Thomas is described as being of York County. So, is this news to anyone? If so, I'd love to hear some opinions.
